David's Spoons

A database of my spoons since I begain carving in 2018, this site also contains other hand carved items such as spatulas and even our wedding rings.

Spoons so far:

A spoon is typically carved from green wood, which easier to carve and is likely to crack as it is less brittle. However, it is prone to splitting as it dries. Green wood also allows cleaner, longer cuts.

I use a small saw, a sharp hand axe, a straight knife and a hook knife. Good woods for carving include birch, maple / sycamore and fruit woods, although there are many other suitable types. Oak and ash are not suitable as they are hard to carve and have large grains which can retain food. Spoons are finished with a food-safe oil such as linseed or walnut.
